Where to start with Ayurvedic hair care

Hair rarely falls for one reason. Diet, stress, illness, hard water and simple over-washing all play a part. Ayurveda has traditionally worked on the scalp itself rather than the strand, nourishing the skin the hair grows from, and doing it consistently rather than occasionally.

If you only change one thing, make it regular scalp oiling. Bhringraj is the herb most associated with hair in classical Ayurveda. We have covered what it is and what it does in the complete guide to bhringraj, and how to actually use the powder in bhringraj powder for hair growth.

Why hair falls in the first place

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. What is not normal is a sudden increase, a widening parting, or clumps coming out in the shower. Those usually trace back to something systemic such as iron or vitamin D deficiency, thyroid changes, a recent illness or fever, crash dieting, or the months after childbirth. Oiling helps the scalp; it does not fix a deficiency. We have set out the common causes in what causes sudden hair fall.

When hair fall needs a doctor, not an oil

See a physician or dermatologist if hair is coming out in patches, if the scalp is sore, scaling or inflamed, if loss is sudden and heavy, or if it comes with fatigue, weight change or irregular periods. A blood test costs little and rules out the causes no topical product can address. These products support scalp and hair health; they are not a treatment for diagnosed medical hair loss.

Common questions

How often should I oil my hair?

Once or twice a week is enough for most people. More often is not better, and heavy oiling on an already oily scalp can make flaking worse.

How long before I see a difference?

Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month, so give any routine three to four months before judging it. Reduced breakage and less scalp itch usually show up sooner.

Powder or oil, which should I buy?

Oil if you want something you can use weekly with no preparation. Powder if you are happy mixing a pack and want to control what goes into it. Many people use both.

Can I use rosemary oil directly on my scalp?

No. Essential oils are concentrated and can irritate skin undiluted. Mix 3 to 5 drops into a spoon of carrier oil, and patch test on your forearm first.

Is delivery free?

Yes, on all prepaid orders across India.
