What is tea tree oil?
Tea tree oil is the steam distilled leaf oil of Melaleuca alternifolia, a paperbark tree native to the swampy coastal country of northern New South Wales in Australia. The Bundjalung people used the crushed leaves long before anyone bottled the oil. Commercial distillation began in the 1920s. This bottle holds the pure, undiluted oil with nothing else added.
One correction worth making
Tea tree is not an Ayurvedic herb, and you will sometimes see it sold as one. It comes from Australia, not the Indian subcontinent, and classical Ayurvedic texts never mention it. We would rather tell you where it actually comes from than borrow a heritage it does not have.
How do you judge good tea tree oil?
Two compounds decide quality, and they pull in opposite directions. Because of that, a price tag tells you far less than a lab report does.
Terpinen-4-ol
The main active constituent, and the one you want plenty of. It is what gives tea tree oil its characteristic properties, so a higher figure indicates a better distillation.
1,8-cineole
The irritant fraction. Higher levels mean a harsher oil on skin, so a lower figure is better. Cheap oils tend to run high here.
The GC/MS report
Gas chromatography measures both. ISO 4730 is the international standard that sets limits for tea tree oil composition, and a serious supplier can show you where their batch sits.
Your own senses
Expect a sharp, fresh, medicinal, camphor-like aroma. A faint or sweetish smell suggests dilution with a cheaper oil, so trust your nose.
How do you dilute tea tree oil?
Never apply it neat. Undiluted tea tree oil is a common cause of contact dermatitis, and dilution costs you nothing. One millilitre of oil gives roughly 20 drops, so the maths below is simple.

Good carriers include jojoba, sweet almond, coconut and sesame oil. Aloe vera gel works too if you prefer a lighter feel.
Three ways people use it
On the face
Blend to 1% in a carrier, then dab on with a clean fingertip. Keep it well away from the eyes and lips.
On the scalp
Blend to 3% in coconut or almond oil. Massage in, leave it for 20 to 30 minutes, then wash out with your usual shampoo.
In a diffuser
Add three to five drops to the water. The aroma is sharp and clean, and it suits a study or a bathroom.
Around the house
A few drops in a bucket of water freshens mop water and bins. Keep pets out of the room while it dries.
How should you store it?
Tea tree oil degrades. Oxygen, light and warmth slowly convert terpinen-4-ol into compounds that irritate skin far more than the fresh oil does. Therefore storage is not a detail, and an old bottle is not simply a weaker bottle.

Safety: read this before the first drop
Tea tree oil is potent, and most problems come from using it wrongly rather than from the oil itself. Two of the warnings below are serious.
- Never swallow it. Tea tree oil is toxic when taken by mouth, even in small amounts, and it can cause confusion, unsteadiness and loss of consciousness. Keep it well out of reach of children, and call a doctor immediately if anyone drinks it.
- Keep it away from cats and dogs. Tea tree oil is poisonous to pets through both skin contact and licking. Do not use it on animals, and do not diffuse it in a closed room where a pet cannot leave.
- Always dilute before skin contact. Neat oil is a frequent cause of allergic contact dermatitis.
- Patch test first. Apply your diluted blend to the inner forearm, then wait 24 hours before using it on the face.
- Avoid the eyes, the inside of the ears, the nostrils and the mouth. Rinse with a carrier oil rather than water if it gets into your eyes.
- Do not apply it to broken skin, open wounds or burns.
- Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor agrees.
- Do not use it on infants or young children.
- Stop using it if redness, itching, stinging or a rash develops, since these signal sensitisation.
