What is Bhringraj powder?
Bhringraj powder is the dried whole plant of Eclipta alba, also catalogued as Eclipta prostrata, milled to a fine churna. Ayurveda calls it Keshraja, meaning king of the hair. Moreover it has been the standard herb in Indian hair packs and scalp oils for centuries. Besides that, the jar holds nothing else at all.
Which bhringraj are you actually buying?
Yet here is the thing most sellers never mention. Bhringraj is not one plant. In fact, classical Ayurveda recognises several varieties by flower colour, and different suppliers ship different species under the same Hindi name. Consequently the jar you order online may not contain what you expected.
| Variety | Botanical name | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Sveta (white) | Eclipta alba, also listed as Eclipta prostrata | The white flowered variety, and the one most classical hair preparations mean. This is what is in our jar. |
| Peeta (yellow) | Wedelia chinensis or Wedelia calendulacea | A different genus with yellow flowers. Ayurvedic scholars still debate its identity, and suppliers frequently substitute it for the white variety. |
| Rakta (red) | Flaviera repanda | Rarely traded, so you are unlikely to meet it commercially. |
| Neela (blue) | Not established | Named in some texts, although no agreed botanical identity exists. |
For that reason our label prints the botanical name, Eclipta alba, so you can check it against what you ordered. Therefore, whenever you buy any Ayurvedic single herb, look for the Latin binomial rather than the Hindi name alone.
How do you check the powder when it arrives?
Single herb powders are among the easiest products to adulterate, because leaf powders look alike once milled. Fortunately you can run four checks in the first minute after opening the jar. Better still, none of them need equipment.
In general, expect a deep and slightly dull green with a grey cast. Bright green suggests added colour, whereas a brownish tone usually means old stock.
Similarly, the aroma should be green, hay like and mildly earthy. A damp or musty smell points to poor storage, and no smell at all points to age.
Bhringraj is distinctly bitter. So if a pinch on the tongue tastes flat or chalky, the powder has probably been cut with a filler.
Stir a spoonful into water. Then watch the colour, because real bhringraj forms a smooth green paste while henna adulteration releases a reddish brown tinge.
What do people use bhringraj powder for?
Two uses account for almost all of it. Notably, both are external.
First mix it with water, yoghurt or aloe gel into a paste, then apply to the scalp and lengths. Because the paste coats the hair shaft, hair feels conditioned and combs more easily once rinsed.
Here the powder is simmered gently in coconut or sesame oil, then strained. This is the classical route. As a result you get the dark green bhringraj oil that Indian households have made at home for generations.
How do you make a bhringraj hair pack?
One pack takes about ten grams of powder. Consequently a 100 g jar gives you roughly ten applications.
Start with two tablespoons of powder in warm water, yoghurt or aloe gel. Above all, aim for a thick curd consistency that will not drip.
Next, leave the paste for ten minutes, so that the powder swells and absorbs the liquid properly.
Work from scalp to ends with a brush or your fingers. Meanwhile, wear gloves, since the paste stains hands and towels green.
Finally, wash out with plain water, then follow with a mild shampoo if you need one. Use it once a week.
To infuse it into oil instead
To begin, warm 200 ml of coconut or sesame oil on the lowest heat, then stir in four tablespoons of powder. Keep it below a simmer for about 20 minutes. Above all, never let it fry. Afterwards cool it completely, strain through muslin, and bottle it. Stored in a dark cupboard, the oil keeps for around three months.
